Last week, I had the privilege of joining Dr. Wendy O’Connor and Jenni Wilson as the guest on their podcast: The Relationship Show.  I originally met Jenni through her work for LA-CAMFT, a professional organization for Los Angeles based therapists.  She coordinates speakers for monthly networking events, and I told her I wanted to speak about asexuality.

As I’ve written about before, asexuality is sorely misunderstood by laypeople and therapists alike.  Folks who know what it means bring a lot of assumptions to the table… things like:

  • Asexual folks are broken and need to be fixed so they can enjoy sex like everyone else.
  • All asexual people have a history of trauma.
  • All/No asexual people want romantic relationships.
  • All/No asexual people are repulsed by sex.

She told me their speaker series was full for the year, but was really excited about our conversation – so she invited me to be a guest on her podcast!  It was a lot of fun – we had a great conversation about myths and facts of this community, and especially about the diversity within it.

You can also get the episode on Podbean or iTunes.

And as always, when discussing demographics I’m not a member of, I want to refer you to another resource that represents the voices of the community I’m discussing.  The best resource on the internet for asexuality is AVEN: The Asexual Visibility and Education Network.
